Generic Pressure Washer Questions

Which is more important—GPM PSI?

Both or neither. Gallons per minute (GPM) says how much rinse you’ll be getting after the machine has cleaned the dirt from whatever surface you’re washing. Pounds per square inch (PSI) tells how much you’ll be able to clean off a surface. GPM is generally more important for farmers or fast rinsing and flushing. PSI is more important for people cleaning abrasive materials such as bricks or concrete, where dirt and paint can really soak in and get a grip on the material.

Can I use a generator to power a pressure washer?

Yes, you can use a generator to power a pressure washer. However, you need to ensure that the generator's power output matches or exceeds the pressure washer's power consumption. For example, if your pressure washer requires 1450 watts, you should use a generator with at least 1500 watts of capacity.

Machine doesn't reach high pressure

Please examine below checking points:

1. Garden hose too small: Use 3/4 in. hose.
2. Restricted water supply: Check hose for kinks, leaks, and blockages.
3. Insufficient water: Open water source fully.
4. Hose leaking: Replace hose.
5. Hose kinked: Remove kinks.

If issue persists, please contact us at support@toolcy.com

Water is leaking at the connection between the hose and the spray gun.

This is likely due to a defective or missing O-ring between the high-pressure hose and the spray gun. Replace the O-ring to fix the issue.

Pump doesn’t produce pressure

Make sure there’s enough water supply. Inspect and replace any leaking trigger handle. Clear any clogged nozzle. Squeeze the trigger to remove air from the line. Clean or replace the water inlet filter.

Pressure washer does not start when the trigger is pressed

Ensure the power cord is connected to a live outlet, the on/off switch is in the "on" position, and the GFCI plug is reset. Check the circuit breaker and use a suitable extension cord if necessary. Squeeze the trigger to relieve any water pressure in the hose.

I cannot remove the pressure hose from my machine

Turn off at the tap, turn the power supply off then pull the trigger and try again.

Gas Pressure Washer-Related Questions

Which type of gasoline to use?

Always use fresh, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher and treated with a stabilizer. Avoid gasoline with over 10% ethanol and fuel stored in metal or dirty containers. Using incorrect gasoline can damage the engine and void the warranty.

Can I use hot water with my pressure washer?

No, only use the cold with the pressure washer. Cold water helps to cool the pump. Hot water can damage a cold-water pressure washer pump.

What detergent can I use with my pressure washer?

Use only detergents approved for pressure washers. Avoid caustic materials, solvents, flammable substances, or bleach.

Does the pressure washer maintain high pressure when using soap?

Apply detergent at low pressure only, and ensure the spray wand is in the low-pressure position.

What if the engine isn't working?

If the motor isn't working, first ensure the power and fuel valve are on. Then, check the engine oil level and gasoline freshness. Low oil or old gasoline can prevent starting. For detailed troubleshooting, please refer to the post.

Why does water sometimes spray from the valve on the pump?

If you see water spraying from a valve on your pressure washer pump, it's likely from the thermal relief valve (TRV), which activates if the water gets too hot. To prevent this, use only cold water, turn off the machine if not in use for over two minutes, and keep the supply hose out of direct sunlight.

Do I need to maintain the pump?

The Pressure Washer Pump is maintenance-free. If you notice oil leakage, do not operate the washer. Have it serviced by a qualified technician.

Where to store my pressure washer?

Store your pressure washer in a dry, well-ventilated area. Keep gasoline-powered models away from open flames and sparks. For winterizing and storage instructions, see our post.

How do I store/winterize the pressure washer pump?

It is recommended to follow below steps when storing the unit for more than 20 days or when freezing temperatures are expected.
Please check the post for detailed instruction.

Electric Pressure Washer-Related Questions

What is a GFCI for an electric pressure washer?

A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) is a safety device that protects users from electrical shock. For electric pressure washers, a GFCI monitors the flow of electricity and automatically cuts off power if it detects a ground fault, such as electricity leaking from the circuit. This is especially important in wet or outdoor environments, where the risk of electrical shock is higher.

Using a GFCI with an electric pressure washer is essential for safety, helping to prevent accidents and protect both the user and the equipment.
